Khoo Hooi Hye, death July 1936
Penang, July 27. The death has occurred of Khoo Hooi Hye, former lawn tennis champion of Malaya. Khoo Hooi Hye was born at Penang in 1901 and was educated at the Penang Free School. He started playing lawn tennis at the age of 15 and showed a fine aptitude for the game. He won the Penang Chinese Recreation Club championship in 1918 and then for several years following. In 1922 he won the covered court championshop held at Singapore. The following year he took both the Singapore and Malayan titles for the first time. In 1924 he was in England and played at Wimbeldon, also achieving many successes in minor tournaments. Back in Malaya in 1925, Khoo Hooi Hye reigned supreme in lawn tennis here for several years. He took the Singapore title from 1925 to 1929 and the Malayan title from 1925-27 and again in 1929. In recent years Khoo has been living in Shanghai and has represented China in international matches. He was in the national championship final last year, losing to Kho Sin Kie of Java. He has been on many tours with China's leading players, in the Philippines, the Netherlands Indies and other countries. [The Straits Times, 27 July 1936, Page 12]
