 MR. J.W. HALLIFAX. Death Of Penang Pioneer. INFORMATION has been received in Penang of the death in England at the age of 80 of Mr. J. W. Hallifax, a former Municipal President of Penang. After a distinguished educational career in England and Germany Mr. Hallifax came to Malaya in 1879. Subsequently he joined Messrs. Katz Brothers. Later he became Municipal Secretary, and then Municipal President, which post he held from 1900 to 1906. Retiring, he became a general agent and auctioneer. Mr. Halifax was regarde as one of the most brilliant Penang pioneers, being largely responsible for the early development of Geroge Town. [Malaya Tribune, 3 January 1936, Page 12]
