Ong Ewe Hai, the founder of the firm of Messrs, Ong Ewe Hai & Co. of Sarawak and Singapore died on the 9th of June at his residence in Singapore aged 60. We understand that he came to Sarawak about 42 years ago. For the last 12 years he has resided in Singapore, paying occasional visits to Kuching. The firm held the Opium and other Farms here till 1867, and also again from July 1885 to June 1888. His property in Singapore must have improved wonderfully in value, as it is rumoured that he died worth $800,000; he has left a family of 17 children.
