Saw Soon Chean, death September 1964, Penang

Penang Fri. --- A big crowd, including delegates from the Penang MCA and several other organisations, attended the funeral today of Mr Saw Soon Chean, a pioneer merchant from China who sailed to Malaya by junk in 1899. Mr. Saw, who died at his home in Prangin Road on Monday at the age of 92, was the uncle of Penang banker, Mr Saw Choo Theng, and the state MCA President, Mr Saw Seng Kew. He is survived by over 200 children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other near relatives. After a funeral procession covering a two-mile route through the city, the body was cremated at Batu Gantong. Mr Saw was a founder member of the Chin Kang Hoay Kuan and the Saw Khaw Lean Kongsi.
