CHINESE WEDDING
Mr. Tan Chong Chew Marries Miss Foo Gim Yong.

A wedding on an unusually elaborate scale is being celebrated in Enggor Street where Mr. Tan Chong Chew, third son of our well-known and highly respected citizen, Mr. Tan Kheam Hock, has been married to Miss Foo Gim Yong, the accomplished daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Foo Boon Sean, of Penang.

Friday was the eve of the ceremony, and the customary dinner was given to a large number of Chinese friends. This function will be repeated this evening. On Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. Tan Kheam Hock honoured the bridal pair by holding a reception to which a large number of Europeans were invited besides many Chinese friends of the bride and bridegroom's families.

Among those present were the Hon. A. M. Pountney (Colonial Treasurer), Mr. J. R. Nicholson, C.M.G., Lieut-Colonel Derrick, V.D., Mr. W. King, Dr. Fowlie, Dr. Galloway, Dr. Keith and Messrs. A.W. Bean, Tessensohn, P. A. Yearwood, A. S. K. Macdonald, P. N. Robinson, Foulger, Alford and many others, including quite a number of ladies.

Miss Foo Gim Yong, who was attired in a full Chinese wedding trousseau of exceptional beauty, having been conducted to her room where the bridal veil was lifted, then appeared before her relatives and friends in a beautiful court robe and a exquisite crown studded with brilliants and other precious stones. She received the hearty good wishes of all present and daintily acknowledged the compliments paid her.

Following this, Mr. Nicholson proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom and of Mr. and Mrs. Tan Kheam Hock eulogising the services of the bridegroom in the Singapore Harbour Board, referring to the many good public spirited qualities of Mr. Tan Kheam Hock, and wishing all of them long life and happiness. The toast was received with much enthusiasm and cheering after which Mr. Tan Chong Chew thanked Mr. Nicholson for his kindly remarks and those present for attending to honour the bride and himself.

More cheers were given and then Mr. Tan Chong Chew led a small informal dance, during which the bride who is an excellent pianist played several selections, including Tipperary, in which the guest joined heartily.

Numerous costly presents were inspected and the wedding suite and rich Chinese silks were greatly admired, after which the host and hostess were heartily thanked, the bride and bridegroom again receiving cordial congratulations before the happy function concluded.

Tan Huck Wan and Lim Chin Choo, marriage 17 September 1939, Singapore

The wedding will take place on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Penang Cot, River Valley Road, of Mr. Tan Huck Wan, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Tan Chong Chew, to Miss Lim Chin Choo. The wedding will be performed in the old style, the bride's constume being specially imported. The band of the 2nd Battalion, Loyal Regiment, will be in attendance and there will also be a ronggeng party present.
